NETFLIX TV | JANUARY 2016

To start 2016 out, Netflix released the following new series.  TV HACK sums ’em up in a couple sentences each.

Angry Birds Toons: Season 1

Yes, they did indeed make an animated television show based on the popular mobile app game.

The Celebrity Plastic Surgeons of Beverly Hills: Season 1

Think Nip/Tuck. But the reality show version.

Forensic Files: Collection 2

If you can’t stop watching true crime after binging Netflix’s Making a Murderer, this might keep you temporarily occupied. Clue: watch The Staircase and The Jinx first.

Forensic Files

Friday Night Tykes: Season 1-2

Clear Eyes. Full Hearts. Can’t Lose. Except with little beings.

Friday Night Tykes

Stewart Lee’s Comedy Vehicle: Season 3

This BBC comedy favorite’s back on the stage, delivering devious, wry, occasionally unsanitary punch-lines.

Under Arrest: Season 1

A reality show reminiscent of COPS for those who like more dialogue and slightly less incessant bleeping. That’s right–COPS for the literate.

Under Arrest

I’ll Have What Phil’s Having: Season 1

A PBS reality show that sees famous LA peeps being foodies and chatting with Phil (of Exporting Raymond fame) over nom-nom.

New Girl: Season 4

Zoe Deschanel is impossible to stop watching, whether in an Apple commercial, an indie band, or in this zany sitcom where she’s not quite one of the boys.

Sofia the First: Season 1

Full of princesses, mermaids, and sprites, this Disney cartoon is sure to entertain the 5-9 set.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Season 10

After ten seasons of dark, bizarre humor on FX, this sitcom (very much intended for adults) gave Danny DeVito quite a comeback role and features nonstop snark.

Dragons: Race to the Edge: Season 2

This spin-off series from the Dreamworks’ How to Train Your Dragon films features our favorite motley crew of animated dragons and the dragon handlers who love them.

Littlest Pet Shop: Season 4

You know what they say about the littlest: they can often surprise you. The talking animals of small stature that populate this pet shop are no different. Fans of My Little Pony and their children might enjoy.

Parks and Recreation: Season 7

Degrassi: The Next Class: Season 1

The Degrassi series, which first premiered on Canadian TV in the 1980s, is perhaps the best pre-teen dramedy of all time, up there with My So Called Life. Of course it inspired progeny like this new Netflix series.

Sirens: Season 2

A bit like Brooklyn Nine Nine with EMTs, thus the sirens. This USA series, which loosely adapts a British show, comes with the Dennis Leary stamp of approval.

Z Nation: Season 2

If you avoided Z Nation because you thought it was just another Walking Dead wannabe and could never fit those massively bloody shoes, you’d be a bit right. That said, critics generally agree that the series gets better if you stick this SYFY series out to season 2.

Z Nation

When Calls the Heart: Season 2

The dramatic love story of Elizabeth and Jack, who have not only swept away a bevy of Hallmark channel fans with their romance but inspired two-hour specials.

When Calls the Heart

From Dusk Till Dawn: Season 2

Based on the horror film, this Netflix-distributed series is clearly Robert Rodriguez’ baby. As such, the series will show up with either a 1 or 5 star rating on your profile and rarely anything in-between. If you’re a fan of the franchise, odds are it’ll grow on you.
